Beach

As the saying goes, "Life is a Beach," and in the Bahamas, life is beautiful.  The coastline is absolutely breathtaking.  The beaches are pearly white and the seas are hues of transparent blues and greens.  It's no wonder that well known artist choose the Bahamas as their primary subject.  And, although the shoreline is magnificent throughout Nassau, Paradise Island embraces the ultimate stretch of sand and surf.

Just east of the colossal architecture known as Atlantis, and keenly hidden adjacent to the Marriott Beach Club is Cabbage Beach.  Here, the sand is smooth and the coral-free water is delightfully refreshing.   The water is so clear that it's possible to catch a glimpse of the needle fish, a long silvery vertebrate.  You have to really concentrate to see them as these fish blend well with the sea.

Like most beaches in Nassau, Cabbage Beach is open to the public and dogs are free to romp in the waves.  There aren't any facilities, no lifeguards on duty, just heavenly beach and sand.   It's impossible not to feel like you are in Paradise.

During the month of June, brilliantly red-colored starfish are plentiful in the ocean.  It's my conjecture that it is their mating season .  Additionally, around April through June, the waves carry to shore millions of tiny brown creatures called sea thimbles.  A form of jellyfish, the sea thimble resembles the sewing thimble, hence the name.  Caution!  If they come in contact with your skin, you'll eventually be overwhelmed by an uncontrollable itch, followed by a reddish rash which is referred to by dermatologists as "swimmers eruption".  The treatment is simple, a salve, but it's best to avoid the experience entirely.  Most likely, your visit to the island with be thimble-free.
